What Parents Need to Know About Dental Emergencies

A child’s dental emergency can give many parents a lot of stress and anxiety. Unfortunately, such cases can happen at any corner, especially when you consider the risk of injury of an active child.

It’s important to know how to handle these cases properly to ensure the child’s dental health isn’t significantly impacted.

The Different Types of Dental Emergencies, and What to Do About Them

1. Dental Loss

If a child suffers an injury and knocks out one of their teeth, the first thing to do is to see if the child needs immediate care. If they do, call 911 immediately and ask for help.

If the tooth is the only issue to worry about and it’s an adult or permanent tooth, place it in a container of milk to keep it moist and go see your dentist right away. Baby teeth don’t necessarily have to be kept moist, but you should also bring them to the dentist with you.

2. Cracked Teeth

Rinse the child’s mouth with warm water to clean the area, and place a cold compress to help with pain and swelling. Contact your child’s dentist right away and book an appointment. They may also give you additional tips based on your child’s dental health history.

3. Toothache

A toothache can have many different causes, so it’s really important to take the child to see a dentist as soon as possible. Your child could be experiencing pain because of a small cavity or inflammation in the gum area.

In any case, you can try cold compresses, and rinse the mouth to remove any food debris that could be making matters worse.

4. Stuck Objects

If your child gets something stuck between their teeth, try to gently remove it with dental floss. Do not use sharp objects or even a toothpick, as you can accidentally hurt the child’s gums. If you can’t remove the object yourself, take the child to the dentist as soon as possible.

5. Bleeding

If your child is bleeding in the mouth region, gently rinse the mouth with warm water. You should call 911 as soon as possible, or contact your dentist for an emergency appointment, especially if the bleeding doesn’t seem to stop.
